Dr. Dale Brant is a Houston dentist who joined the Medical Center Dental Group in 1989.Many cosmetic dental services depend on the structural integrity of bones and teeth.  If bones or teeth are damaged, oral surgery may be damaged.  Finding a good oral surgeon may not be as easy as finding a general dentist.  Good oral surgeons are experienced specialists that undergo very advanced training and are required by the American Dental Association to complete both special licensing and residency requirements.

This, in turn, authorizes them to perform the most complex of dental procedures using the most sophisticated dental technology.  Finding a professional of this magnitude is going to require both a little bit of legwork on your part, and a reference check on credentials, experience, and case histories.

Dr. Charles Campbell is a 1972 graduate of the University of Texas at El PasoThe best way to find a good oral surgeon is to begin by asking your regular dentist or family doctor.  Either one of them may know of an oral surgeon who performs the particular procedure you are in need of or suspect you have a need for.

If no names comes to mind readily, then turn to your personal network of family, friends, coworkers, and your local area pharmacist.  There is a good possibility that one of these people has had oral surgery done in the past.  Ask for candid feedback on the caregiver and on the success of the treatment they received.

Dr. Elizabeth OSullivan-Winslow is a 1978 graduate of the University of Texas Dental Branch You can also ask your insurance company to help you find an oral surgeon, although they will not comment on the skills or qualifications of anyone on the list.

Use the Internet to find dentists in your area.  Some websites you find, however, may not have as much detailed content as ours.  They may only offer you very general information and standard contact information.  Feel free to contact anyone who peaks your curiosity and ask questions directly if you do not find enough information or any substantial professional diaries on their site.

When it comes to our site, we encourage you to read our case histories, study our credentials, and study articles and blogs we have published on our practice.   You can also ask us for references.

In addition to research, you really need to feel good about the oral surgeon you find.  Choose an individual who offers a blend advanced medical skill and expertise who is also compassionate and gentle as a human being.   Avoid going to someone who is new to the practice, and avoid anyone who is harsh with you or makes your intelligence feel diminished or insulted.

By saying this we by no means point fingers at anyone.  We simply point out the facts that there are inexperienced oral surgeons and oral surgeons who are just not very nice people.

You must draw your own conclusions about both at the end of the day.

A good oral surgeon will not be insulted by a little question and answer jig on your part.  You have a right to ask questions about a potential caregivers ability to deliver said care.  Professionals who have integrity, experience, and healthy self-esteem never hide things or engage in defensive posturing.

They also know how important it is to alleviate fear and anxiety with people who may have phobias about dentistry.   They will also provide you with emergency care options in the event that a true dental emergency occurs.  This does not happen often, but it does sometimes.

Work only with a staff that has measures in place to deal with the unexpected if it occurs.
