Sports Dentistry is a essential to the health, safety, and overall performance of each and every player. Dental trauma or a disease within the mouth can put a player flat out on his or her back. That is why we have worked so hard to help Rice University athletes in need of sports dental care and emergency sports dentist care.
The Houston Medical Center Dental Group is only steps away from Rice University and partners with their staff of trainers to meet the dental needs of all the players on the Rice Football Team. We provide the full gamut dental services to make certain that the maximum possible safety of each player, thereby improving team spirit and furthering the pursuit of excellence and accomplishment.
One of the main things we do for them is to manufacture protective mouthguards for football players. These custom mouthguards are tailor-made for each individual player and offer better protection and comfort. However, there are many other components to sports dentistry that we also provide to athletes at Rice. Dental emergency service is by necessity something we have to anticipate when dealing with rough contact sports.
One of the most important cases in our medical history occurred about 8 ago. It illustrates just how important emergency care is to sports dentistry.
One afternoon, we received a call from the trainer at Rice University. He told us the alarming news that he would be bringing in one of the cheerleaders for a dental emergency. This student was a flyer in their gymnastics routines. During the a practice session, she took a hard fall to the ground and knocked out several of her teeth.
In such a situation, in order to save the teeth, certain things have to happen and happen fast.
The teeth have to be kept clean and moist. The patient can either hold them in his or her mouth, or he or she can keep them immersed in a sanitary container filled with a saline water solution.
If teeth are exposed to open air out of the mouth for more than 30 minutes, the chances of re-implantation will slip away fast
In most instances, sports dentists have to perform immediate root canal procedures as well.
Afterward, the teeth must be re-implanted and stabilized
The cheerleader who came to us had lost a total of five front teethsome in the upper jaw and some in the lower. The trainer had been informed to keep the teeth moist and clean and get her in right away. We were able to get these teeth reimplanted before that critical 30 minutes
Over the course of the next year, the success of the procedure was self evident. Only one tooth was lost, and it was replaced by a dental implant.
Since then, the remaining four teeth continue to prove themselves viable and stable. This lady is still a patient of ours since her graduation from the university.
These same services are available to other universities, colleges, and school districts interested in protecting the safety and maximizing the performance of their athletes.
