Houston Porcelain Crowns

When a person’s tooth becomes damaged from an accident or runaway tooth decay, that person finds himself with two problems on his or her hands.  One of these is a medical problem, and the other one is a personal problem.

The medical problem is the continuing and almost certain possibility of future tooth decay and subsequent tooth destruction.  The personal problem is a tooth that diminishes the attractiveness of that person’s smile.

The outstanding virtue of a porcelain crown is its ability to solve both problems at once.

A porcelain crown is a precision-made, cosmetic tooth enhancement that is manufactured in a dental laboratory.  It is custom-sized to fit over the tooth that has been damaged.  Because it must be made to custom order in a lab, it will take at least two visits to the Cosmetic Dentistry Center for a person to get fitted with a porcelain crown.

The appointment will involve checking on the degree of damage the tooth has suffered and preparing it for crowning.  Because today’s cosmetic dentists are sophisticated and compassionate individuals who believe in pain-free dentistry, they strive to make things as comfortable as humanly possible.  The first thing they do is numb the area around the tooth so they can work on it without alarming the patient.

They also put a rubber dam in the back of the patient’s mouth to protect his or her throat from dental debris that often falls backward when the tooth is being worked on.  This keeps the air passageways and esophagus clean and clear.

The dentist then sets out to remove all decayed matter from the tooth using a dental handpiece.  At the same time, he or she also shapes the tooth to dimensions that will better support the new crown.  So that lab workers can make a porcelain crown that will match the tooth, the dentist takes an impression of the teeth that is then used to make a model of your mouth.

When this model arrives at the lab, the technicians will be able to use it as an exact replica of the mouth and make a dental crown that precisely fits the tooth in need of restoration.

This can take a week or two, and the tooth will need protection in the meantime.  To provide this, cosmetic dentist will place a temporary crown on the tooth.  Although it is only temporary, it is extremely important that the patient care for the crown to preserve the dental work done to date on the tooth and maximize the success of the permanent crown.

When the porcelain crown comes back from the lab, the patient returns to the dentist for the second appointment.  At this time, the dentist removes the temporary crown trial fits the permanent dental crown without cementing it in place.  This is done to make certain that its top surface is flush with those of other teeth and that it lines up correctly with other teeth.

Once it checks out, the crown is then bonded or cemented to the tooth.

Porcelain crowns offer the benefits of strength, durability, and life-like imitation of natural teeth.  Because porcelain is so natural in its appearance, it does not have to be embedded below the gumline and therefore is much easier on gums than certain other cosmetic tooth enhancements
