Gum Disease treatment is on the rise as the amount of people being diagnosed with periodontal infection augments. It is estimated that between 90-95% of the population have some form of gum disease. Treatments for this problem can range from grafting to root planin, or gingivectomy (gum removal) to laser periodontal therapy. The best treatment for gum disease however is prevention. People, who brush and floss on a regular basis, are less likely to develop gum disease or other types of oral problems.

In the past, treatments for gum disease and tooth decay were not always a pleasant experience. Hippocrates and Aristotle wrote about ointments and sterilization procedures, which would use a red-hot wire to treat oral disorders. From the Middle Ages until the 1700’s, many dentists were considered to be “barber surgeons” engaging in various practices that not always pertained to dentistry. These surgeons would perform tooth extractions and minor surgeries. in addition to things such as cutting hair, applying leeches, and even embalming! By the 1800’s, dental therapy had improved a bit, but the treatments for gum disease and tooth decay were still painful.

Dentists, during the 1800’s, would extract teeth with a turnkey. This primitive tool looked like a ratchet wrench and was extremely painful to endure. Prevention of gum disease was enacted through shoddy oral maintenance among dentists, during this time. Teeth were cleaned with scrapers and cavities were removed with archaic hand instruments. Luckily, the practice of dentistry and oral health care has come a long way, since these times.

Treatment for gum disease is still complicated, but not nearly as painful. However, prevention remains the best option for periodontal infection. Medical Center Dental Group professionals want to help you maintain your oral health and keep that beautiful smile from receding. Our dedicated professionals not only clean your teeth, but also give you valuable information regarding dental hygiene. Periodontal infection can advance, if not diagnosed correctly, and the latter stages can involve more extensive treatments.

Once gum disease has settled in treatments become very limited. You can either put off the problem or choose to treat the condition. Delaying therapy is not an efficient way of relinquishing periodontal infection. This is an ongoing condition, which causes degeneration of the bones that support the teeth. This leads to tooth loss and results in the removal of a beautiful smile from the world. Treatments for periodontal problems eliminate the infection, while keeping the disease in check.

Many people do not want to have intrusive surgical procedures done, in order to correct their periodontal infection. Some of these procedures can result in postoperative pain and discomfort. Medical Center Dental Group wants to offer you a non-surgical procedure for the treatment of gum disease. Laser Periodontal Treatment or LPT can help to eliminate infection and heal oral tissue, which has undergone the stress of periodontal disease. We use this procedure to preserve healthy oral tissue, which has not been ravaged by infection and to maintain the height of the gums surrounding the teeth.

Laser Periodontal Treatment uses a laser, which produces a small beam of concentrated light energy. This energy sterilizes the area, while removing all of the diseased tissue. An ultrasonic scaler and unique hand held instruments are then used to remove root surface tarter. The laser then cleans the rest of the pocket and seals this area, so germs cannot form. The utilization of lasers in conjunction with traditional scaling and root planing produces an effect comparable to surgery with a much less invasive procedure. This less invasive technique is very effective and there is no removal of tissue. Antibiotics and pain pill are administered to the patient and the process does require frequent visits.

There are numerous benefits to using LPT. These include faster healing, less bleeding, reduced risk of infection, and decreased sensitivity. Post surgical pain can be managed with Motrin in most cases instead of the heavy-duty painkillers that tend to make most people sleepy. Medical Center Dental Group wants to take the fear out of the treatment for gum disease. So bring back that beautiful smile you once had before, by letting our caring professionals attend to your oral health.
