The facebow, used in conjunction with orthodontic headgear, is used most often for correcting an overbite in dental patients by slowing down or stopping growth in the upper jaw.  The facebow allows the headgear to attach to the braces, and a headcap or straps anchor the headgear to the back of the head or neck.  Many times, elastic bands are used to apply pressure to the facebow; the combination of the facebow, the head cap, and the elastic bands retard upper jaw growth so the lower jaw can catch up.  The time necessary for wearing the dental appliance depends on the severity of the overbite and the rate of growth the patient is experiencing.
