Shop our Online Catalog: Dental Handpieces

Dentist handpieces are virtually the same as those used for dental hygiene with only a few variances. As the dental field changes with the help of technology, so do the handpieces that are used. Many are now air driven and fiber-optics are being used. For instance, LED lights are now being used in dentist handpieces to provide Houston cosmetic dentists with better illumination in their patients’ mouths.

One way that fiber-optics has helped in the dental field is with the creation of laser handpieces. A laser beam is transmitted through the fiber-optic cable, and that beam can perform multiple tasks such as those routinely used for dental crowns, bridges, and fillings. It is used to remove tooth decay and cauterize soft tissue. This is quickly becoming a popular piece of dental equipment because the procedure can be done much faster and often, no anesthesia is required for the patient.

Probably the most common dentist handpiece is the dentist drill. A dental drill is the most likely the reason that most people fear the dentist, but the drill is a very important piece for many regular and cosmetic dental teeth procedures. A drill removes decay from a tooth and prepares the tooth for restoration work, like a filling. The metal alloy bit attachments that are used are commonly known as burrs. They are made of steel with a tungsten carbide coating. Some are entirely made of tungsten carbine. They may also have a diamond coating. There are multiple types of burrs for all the different types of cosmetic and general dentistry work that are currently performed.

Houston dentists and their dental staff use periodontal probes to map out patients’ gums to see if there is any periodontal disease present. If there is, this is also the way they check to see if the treatment they are using is working against the disease. The probe has numbers on it that measure the pocket depth of the tooth. A healthy pocket depth is around 3mm with no bleeding when using the probe. Anything beyond that can mean that there is a beginning of some sort of periodontal disease.

Ultrasonic dentist handpieces are electrically powered. This type of handpiece uses pulsating water to get rid of plaque and tartar on the tooth and cool the handpiece at the same time. The removal of plaque is vitally important when it comes to dental health. If the plaque is not treated and removed, it can lead to tartar. Untreated tartar can lead to gingivitis as well as many other periodontal diseases and complications down the road. These dentist handpieces are used for teeth whitening in Houston and are also useful for removing the bonding materials that are used to attach braces and other orthodontic treatments.

One other piece of dental equipment that is common in Houston dental practices is the low-speed dentist handpiece. These are air-driven dentist tools that have a much lower RPM than a traditional drill or high-speed handpiece. Low-speed handpieces have an RPM range of 10,000 to 30,000. It operates in both forward and reverse. It is used for removing stains, cavity preparation, and finishing and polishing after cosmetic dentistry restoration work has been completed. Three different types of low-speed attachments are prophylaxis, contra-angle and straight.
