Dental HandPieces Online StoreThe dental field is one that is vastly changing, and so are dental handpieces. They are one of the key components to a practice, and to the patients overall oral health. There is only so much a tooth brush, tooth paste and floss can do, the rest has to be taken care of at the dentist’s office.

Dental hand-pieces are used on teeth and gums to treat and prevent decay. They are made in a variety of styles and types, from low-speed to high-speed, and having multiple attachments.

Since there are multiple types available, let’s take a look at just a few of them to get a better idea of what they do.  There are ultrasonic attachments that are powered by electricity and look similar to scaling tools.  The pulsating water helps rid the tooth of debris, like plaque and tartar. Plaque and tartar removal are vital to a patients oral health.  If not treated properly, plaque leads to tartar, and untreated tartar can lead to multiple periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis. They are also used to remove stains from teeth, as well as removing bonding materials after braces and other orthodontic treatments are completed.

A periodontal probe is another dental hand-piece that is used by dentists and hygienists to look for and prevent periodontal disease. The probe is a numbered tool that is used to measure the pocket depth of each tooth. Mapping the gums in this way can help the professionals track any periodontal disease that may be evident. This is also an effective way to track the progress of any treatment that has been done previously.

Low-speed dental hand-pieces are air-driven tools that range from 10,000 to 30,000 RPM. They can operate in either a forward or reverse motion. They are used for more detailed procedures as well, such as cavity preparation, and the removal of soft tooth decay. They also remove stains and finishes, and polish any restoration work that has been done. They have a variety of attachments, like a straight attachment, a contra-angle attachment, and prophylaxis attachments.

The high-speed versions are also air-driven. They can operate to speeds of up to 450,000 RPM. These are used to prepare a tooth for restoration processes, like a dental filling. It also removes decay, previous restoration work that has failed or decayed, and finishes and polishes completed work. It is also used in preparation for crowns and bridges, and it can also be used during surgery when a tooth needs to be sectioned.

One way that technology has advanced the dental field is with the use of laser tools instead of using rotary instruments. Instead, a laser light beam that is conducted through a fiber-optic cable is used to perform multiple functions. It is used to cauterize soft tissue and rid the tooth of any decay. It cannot be used on teeth that have already had restoration work done, but can be used on surrounding teeth. There are multiple reasons dentists have begun to use this type of tool as well.  Procedures using this type of attachment can be done faster. Anesthesia normally does not need to be used, and it is virtually painless for the patient. Another plus for the patient is that there is no vibration with this type of dental handpiece.
