Dental hand instruments are common dental supplies that are used when you go to your regular maintenance dental appointments. If you have a family dentist and go to your appointments with any regularity, you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect at any given appointment. You know that an exam will include close observation of your teeth, probably with a mirror to help observe any difficult to see spaces. A close visual exam has the potential for revealing a lot of problems, but your dentist will also periodically want to get x-rays of your teeth as well. These can help reveal problems that can’t be seen in the visual exam. They probably won’t do those more than once a year, unless there are some uncommon issues that require them more often. If you do go to the regular appointments, you are probably pretty familiar with the dental hand instruments that are used, even if you don’t know their particular names.
You know that, once you get to your appointment (which you should really get to a little bit ahead of time just in case there’s any extra paperwork you need to complete), you’ll likely go and sign in, and then wait until they call you back into the examination room. Once you’re in the examination room, your exam should start shortly thereafter. It seems to be that it’s becoming more and more common for the dentist to have one or more dental hygienists who do the actual cleaning with the dental hand instruments, while the dentist comes around towards the end of the appointment to check on your teeth. Of course, if your appointment was for a cavity filling or some other procedure beyond a typical cleaning, it would be the dentist taking charge of the appointment and doing the procedure. If you’re having a cavity filled, there are several options for your filling. You can get the metal ones that are becoming less common now that the tooth colored option is available. Or, you could choose the tooth colored composite fillings. The metal ones tend to be less expensive, so if money is an issue, or if you’re looking at a filling for back teeth or for baby teeth (where it will be a shorter term filling), you might choose to go with the metal ones. Whichever you choose, you’re going to need to follow the dentist’s instructions as he walks you through the procedure and gets the filling done with the dental hand instruments.
Remember to listen to your dentist’s instructions regarding the care for your teeth. You’ll want to brush them frequently, and be sure to floss in order to keep them as healthy as you possibly can. The more you pay attention to your teeth now, the less attention the dentist might need to pay to them with his dental hand instruments later. If you work as a team with your dentist, you can help ensure your teeth will be the healthiest they can be.
