If your teeth are stained beyond the abilities of normal cleaning to whiten, or if through accident or prolonged wear your teeth have become chipped or cracked, you may want to consider the benefits of dental bonding. Dental bonding can safely and quickly repair your chipped and cracked teeth in a single, painless office visit. Dental bonding can also lengthen and reshape naturally small or irregular teeth and close the gaps between them. It can even fill cavities as an alternative to amalgam fillings that require extensive removal of healthy tooth surfaces prior to filling. Finally, and most importantly to many of our clients, the cosmetic benefits of dental bonding offer you the chance to start all over with a proud new smile full of straight, white teeth that will last for years
.
The process used in dental bonding is simple and painless. First, the dentist uses a shade guide to match the color of the composite dental bonding resin to the exact color of your teeth. He or she then applies a diluted etching solution with a slightly acidic quality designed to remove a tiny amount of enamel and create microscopic lines in the teeth. The resulting irregular surface allows the dental bonding resin to adhere itself to the enamel surface. Your dentist then molds and smoothes the dental bonding resin until achieving the desired dental contour. At this point, your dentist will use an ultraviolet light or special laser to harden it. The number of layers needed to complete the process depends on the extensiveness of the repairs. Your dentist will likely apply several coats of dental bonding resin, sculpting and hardening each layer along the way. After completing the process, your dentist will then polish the hardened composite resin for its maximum cosmetic effect.
Dental bonding normally requires only one office visit, except in cases where severe tooth damage has resulted from periodontal disease or tooth decay. In such cases, large pieces of teeth may be missing, or gum recession has exposed a portion of the roots and placed them in danger of further decay. To compensate for this, the dentist will create a porcelain mold of the teeth during the first office visit that, when hardened, will furnish a new surface for the composite resin. When the patient returns, the dentist will apply this mold before administering the dental bonding composite. The porcelain mold offers patients the advantage of replacing lost tooth surfaces that have resulted from infection and decay, and it provides a strong, reliable surface onto which composite resin readily bonds. Additionally, the porcelain mold results in a more durable surface for future wear that remains highly resistant to stain.
Dental bonding costs much less than veneers and crowns, removes the least amount of tooth enamel comparative to other dental procedures, and results in a brighter, whiter smile that will last for years.
