Braces Again?

Q: I had braces about 3 or 4 years ago. I lost my retainer and my teeth are shifting back into an overbite. Would I have to get braces again to correct my problem?

A: What you are describing is called orthodontic relapse - teeth going back to crowded position because of non-retention. Depending upon the severity of the tooth movement and the position of your teeth, there are several options available to you that are much easier than repeating full orthodontic treatment:

-making a retainer to use so that teeth don't move any further
-minor tooth movement with
Invisalign, or "invisible" braces to correct the undesired tooth movement.

With the use of limited orthodontic treatment, usually these undesired movements can be corrected and then maintained over time. Retainer wear varies - some people do not seem to have much movement if the retainer is not used - other patients can have significant movement. It is always important to use orthodontic retention immediately after treatment.

Sincerely,
The Medical Center Dental Group
