Flossing:

Flossing is a vital part of proper oral hygiene. The importance of flossing is often overlooked, however cavities and gingivitis typically start between teeth. This is because brushing protects the visible surfaces of the teeth. Unlike flossing, toothbrush bristles cannot reach between these tiny gaps, which leaves them vulnerable to food particles and plaque. Although dentists have recognized the importance of flossing for years, the public has only recently incorporated it into their daily oral hygiene routine.

There is some evidence that prehistoric man may have used a form of flossing with small sticks. However, Levi Spear Parmly invented dental floss around 1815. Of course, this was not the dental floss we use today. He merely advised his patients to use a silk string between the teeth to prevent decay. In 1882, Codman and Shurtleft began offering silk dental floss commercially. Unfortunately, silk dental floss was expensive and shredded easily.

After World War II, Dr. Charles Bass created a nylon dental floss, which made flossing much easier and more affordable. The popularity of flossing began to grow as people started to understand the benefits of this new form of oral hygiene. Today, dentists all over the world stress that flossing is just as important as brushing. Medical Center Dental Group understands that people may feel overwhelmed, when trying to use dental floss. However, with a little practice anyone can reap the benefits of flossing.

There are numerous types of dental floss on the market now. The variety ranges from flavored to waxed. Special dental flosses have been created for individuals with bridges, crowns, and braces, so finding the right option for you has never been easier. Medical Center Dental Group will help find the right dental floss to fit your needs. Once you have chosen a product, it is time to learn how to use it.

People are often intimidated by flossing, but with a little know how and some practice you will feel like a real pro. To begin, tear off approximately 46 inches of floss. Then wind about 18 inches of the product around each middle finger leaving about 5 inches between each hand. Taking your thumbs and index fingers, pinch down on the 5 inches of floss leaving about an inch to use at a time. Then very gently glide the floss between the teeth.

Once the floss is situated, form a “C” shape around the tooth by pulling firmly. Then slide underneath the gum line and carefully move the floss up and down to remove plaque and food, while avoiding side-to-side motions. Continue the same steps on the other side of the tooth. When you hear a squeaking sound, you will know the area is sufficiently cleaned. Then remove the floss from the mouth and wind the product to an unused portion repeating the process on all teeth.

If you are still feeling overwhelmed, don’t worry. The caring professionals at Medical Center Dental Group will walk you through the steps to ensure you are flossing properly. In some cases alternative products may be more effective. Some individuals are more comfortable using dental floss picks. These tools have a two pronged end with floss strung between the tines. Dental forks are an excellent option for people, who have mobility issues in their hands.

The problem may be that the floss will not fit or catches between your teeth. You should share this with the Medical Center Dental Group professionals. They will correct the issue, so that flossing can be accomplished without struggling. Medical Center Dental Group is dedicated to creating beautiful smiles. Their professionals will provide you with the education and services to ensure your teeth are healthy for years to come.
