Partial Dentures

Partial dentures have come a long way, since their humble beginings. Early partial dentures were constructed of several different materials, such as bone, ivory and porcelain. However, these materials had their shortcomings, so human teeth became the best option. Before complete sets of partial dentures were used individual teeth were often replaced through crude methods.

The most common method involved positioning the replacement tooth and tying it to adjacent teeth with a silk line. This rudimentary procedure obviously had its problems and long lasting results were never achieved. George Washington had more success with his partial denture sets. Contrary to the wooden teeth theory, Washington had several sets brilliantly made out of human teeth, elephant ivory, along with hippopotamus tusk and gold.

Although the number of Americans, who have lost their teeth, has decreased quite a bit over the past 40 years, there is still a resounding need for either full or partial dentures. As a person ages it can become more difficult to wear replacements. Health problems, such as xerostomia (dry mouth), can decrease saliva flow and inhibit proper chewing, as well as swallowing. Taking good care of your teeth will decrease your chances of potentially having to wear full or partial dentures.

The professionals at Medical Center Dental Group want you to feel comfortable with your partial dentures. Our caring staff is devoted to giving you state of the art replacements for a clean, healthy smile. We use temporary liners for a comfortable fit, and then reconstruct your partial dentures with a permanent custom made reline, which will adjust to your changing gums over time. A typical fitting process for partial dentures usually takes up to five visits, but the results are quite spectacular.

The two most common types of partial dentures we use are acrylic and porcelain. Acrylic is typically used, when the two front teeth are missing. These are also known as “flippers”. Precision cast versions are extremely durable and have clasps to improve function and fit. Our staff will determine what type of replacement you will need and give you all the information on how to take care of your new replacements.

On your first visit to our office a dental impression is taken of the upper and lower portions of the jaw using a pudding-like material, which turns into a jelly substance after the impression is inscribed. Dental stone is then poured into the impressions. This hardens and forms a perfect replica of the mouth.

Your second visit will include additional impressions using custom trays, which fit the patient’s mouth. These impressions focus on the jaw and muscles in greater detail and yield fantastic models of the jaws for your partial denture. Trays with wax blocks are then made from these impressions to show the jaw relationship, support of the lip and smile line on your third visit. Once this procedure is accomplished teeth can be selected by size, shape, and color to correlate with the age and facial shape of the patient.

During your fourth visit, your partial denture teeth are set in wax and inserted into your mouth. Our devoted staff will check for any changes, which might be needed in tooth arrangement and ensure the bite line for your mouth is correct. Once you and your dentist are happy, the partial denture will be sent to the laboratory for permanent placement. Your final visit is considered your fitting session. Medical Center Dental Group professionals will make any adjustments to your fixtures and give you valuable information on how to take care of your new mouth.
